A sale catalog page is a legal document dressed up as an advertisement. Everything above the pedigree is verified and reportable; a good deal of what sits below it is written by someone who would like you to bid. Learning which is which is most of the skill.
Start at the bottom right: the EPD line
Expected progeny differences are predictions of how a bull's calves will perform compared with the calves of another bull in the same breed, expressed in the units of the trait. A birth weight EPD of +1.4 against a herd bull at +3.9 means you would expect calves 2.5 lb lighter at birth on average, not that calves will weigh 1.4 lb. EPDs only compare within a breed. An Angus BW EPD and a Hereford BW EPD are on different scales and cannot be subtracted from each other.

Accuracy is the number nobody reads
Every EPD carries an accuracy value between 0 and 1. A yearling bull with no progeny sits around 0.25 to 0.40 on most traits — those EPDs are a prediction built from pedigree and his own genomic test, and they will move. A proven sire with hundreds of calves recorded runs 0.90 and up, and his numbers are close to final.
Practically: on a low-accuracy young bull, treat the EPD as the middle of a range rather than a fact. A +70 WW at 0.30 accuracy has real possible change of roughly 10 lb either way. That is fine if you are buying five bulls and averaging them out. It is a real risk if you are buying one bull for a 30-cow herd and betting the calf crop on him.
$Values are indexes, not dollars in your pocket
$M, $W, $F, $G and $B are economic selection indexes that bundle several traits with assumed prices and costs. $M is maternal weaned calf value — what his daughters are worth as cows. $W is weaned calf value for a commercial operation selling at weaning. $B is beef value through the feedlot and grid. The dollar sign is a comparison unit, not a promise. A bull that is $40 higher on $W is expected to be worth $40 more per cow exposed in that specific scenario, under those specific assumed prices.
Pick the one index that matches how you actually sell cattle and sort on it. Buyers who sort on all five at once end up buying an average bull at a top price.
Actual, adjusted and ratio weights
The catalog will list an actual weaning weight, a 205-day adjusted weight, and a ratio. Adjusted weight corrects for age at weaning and dam age so calves born a month apart can be compared. The ratio compares that calf with his contemporary group — 100 is group average, 112 means he weaned 12 percent above the other calves managed alongside him.
Ratios are only as good as the contemporary group. A 115 ratio in a group of four is noise. A 108 in a group of sixty is a real signal. Look for the group size; a reputable consignor will publish it.
The footnotes and what they are not saying
- "Sired by" a famous bull tells you the sire got popular, not that this calf inherited the good half of him.
- "Out of a first-calf heifer" means his weaning weight was adjusted upward for dam age — check the adjusted figure, not the actual.
- "Developed on a forage-based ration" is a genuine positive if you run cattle on grass. Bulls pushed on hot rations melt in the first breeding season.
- "Semen tested" with no date is not a current breeding soundness exam. Ask for the BSE date and the scrotal circumference measurement.
- No mention of trich or BVD-PI testing usually means it was not done. On a bull leaving the state, it will need to be.
Set your number before the ring opens
Decide what the bull is worth to you on paper — salvage value at the end of his working life, divided over the number of calves he will sire, plus what his genetics add per calf. A bull covering 25 cows a year for four years sires roughly 95 calves. If his EPD package is genuinely worth $25 a calf over the bull you would otherwise buy, that is $2,375 of additional value. That is your ceiling, and the auctioneer's job is to find out whether you actually meant it.
