    How to calculate bull to cow ratio

    Bull capacity isn't a single number — it depends on how mature and sound the bull is, how far he has to travel to find and settle cows, and how many days he has to get it done. A rule-of-thumb ratio for a mature bull on flat, improved pasture can overstate capacity by a third or more on rough range with a short season.

    Cows per bull = base ratio (by age) × terrain factor × season-length factor
    Bulls needed = cows exposed ÷ cows per bull (round up)
    Service capacity = bulls owned × cows per bull

    Worked example

    100 cows on rolling pasture with mature bulls over a 65-day season: base 30 cows/bull × 1.0 terrain factor, no short-season penalty since 65 days is over 60, gives 30 cows/bull. 100 ÷ 30 = 3.3, rounded up to 4 bulls needed. Three bulls on hand would only cover 90 head, a shortfall of one bull for this group.

    Common mistakes

    • Applying a flat 1:25 ratio to every pasture. A single ratio ignores terrain, bull age, and season length, which together can swing real capacity by 40% or more.
