How to calculate average daily gain
Average daily gain is the single most-watched performance number in stocker and feedlot production because it drives both days-to-target-weight and cost of gain. It's calculated from two weights and the days between them — the trick is making sure both weights represent real tissue weight rather than gut fill.
Shrunk ending weight = ending weight − (ending weight × shrink %)
ADG = (shrunk ending weight − starting weight) ÷ days on feed
Projected weight = ending weight + (ADG × additional days)
Worked example
A 550 lb stocker calf turned out on wheat pasture weighs 800 lb 120 days later, pulled straight off the field with no shrink applied. Total gain is 250 lb, so ADG = 250 ÷ 120 = 2.08 lb/day — a solid gain for grazing cattle. At that rate, the calf would be projected to reach roughly 862 lb after another 30 days on the same pasture.
Common mistakes
- Comparing shrunk and unshrunk weights. Applying shrink to only one of the two weigh events (or using a different scale each time) distorts ADG without any real change in cattle performance.
- Ignoring days off feed. Sick pen time, weather-related feed cuts, or shipping days should still count in the denominator — leaving them out overstates true ADG.
- Treating ADG as constant across the whole period. Gain is rarely linear; a single average over 150 days can hide a slow start or a late-period slump worth investigating.
- Using scale weights without any shrink on cattle hauled a long distance. Long hauls can add several percent of gut fill that has nothing to do with actual gain.

Why does pencil shrink matter when calculating ADG?
Cattle that have just been hauled, sorted, or held off feed and water carry extra gut fill that inflates a scale weight without representing real tissue gain. A 2-4% pencil shrink on the ending (or both) weight gives a more honest ADG for pricing and performance records.
How much does ADG vary by breed and frame size?
Larger-framed, later-maturing breeds and crosses (Continental influence) tend to post higher ADG on the same ration than smaller-framed, earlier-maturing English breeds, though intake and days to finish also shift accordingly.
Can I use ADG to project a future weight?
Yes — multiply your calculated ADG by the number of additional days to a target date and add it to the current weight. This calculator does that automatically once you enter a target days figure, but treat it as an estimate since ADG is rarely perfectly linear.
Does ADG differ between steers and heifers on the same ration?
Steers typically post modestly higher ADG than heifers on an identical ration, largely because heifers partition more energy toward fat deposition earlier and reach physiological maturity sooner.
What causes ADG to fall short of ration expectations?
The most common culprits are inadequate bunk space or feed availability, health events (respiratory disease, parasites), water quality or access problems, heat stress, and a ration that is not balanced for the intake level cattle are actually achieving.
