    How to calculate cattle shrink

    Shrink is the difference between an animal's starting weight and its weight after transport, handling, or time off feed and water — mostly gut fill, not tissue loss. It scales with time in transit, handling stress, weather, and whether cattle are commingled with unfamiliar animals. You can either estimate shrink from these factors or use a flat, pre-negotiated "pencil shrink" percentage instead.

That's 1,200 × 3.6% = 43 lb lost per head, or 2,150 lb across the load. At $185/cwt, that's 21.5 cwt × $185 = about $3,978 in shrink value on the load — real money that should factor into the price negotiated before shipping.

    • Comparing pencil shrink and actual shrink as if they're the same thing. Pencil shrink is a negotiated flat rate; actual shrink depends on real handling and can run higher or lower.
