    How to calculate pasture rest period

    Overgrazing is a matter of time, not headcount. A plant is overgrazed when it is bitten again before it has replaced the root reserves it spent regrowing. Rest period is the management lever that prevents it, and it moves with species, season, moisture and how hard you grazed last time.

    Rest = baseline recovery (species × season) × moisture factor × severity factor
    Paddocks = (rest ÷ graze days) + 1

    Worked example

    Tall fescue in midsummer baselines at 55 days of recovery. In a year running 80% of normal moisture that stretches to about 69 days. If the herd grazed to 2 inches instead of the 3-inch target, add roughly 15% more — about 79 days. On a three-day move that rotation needs 27 paddocks, which is a clear signal to slow down, destock, or split with temporary wire.

    Common mistakes

    • Running a fixed calendar rotation. A 30-day cycle is generous in May and destructive in August.
    • Measuring rest from when the herd left the paddock behind it. Rest starts the day the herd leaves this paddock.
    • Grazing too close and blaming the drought. Leaf area drives regrowth; taking it all is a self-inflicted delay.
    • Applying cool-season logic to bermudagrass. Warm-season species recover fastest in exactly the weeks fescue stalls.

    Questions ranchers ask

    How long should a pasture rest between grazings?

    Long enough for the plant to regrow to grazing height and refill its root reserves, which depends on species, season and moisture. Cool-season pasture in a wet spring can recover in 18 to 25 days. The same pasture in a hot, dry August may need 60 to 90 days. Rest by regrowth, not by calendar.

    What happens if I come back too soon?

    The plant is regrowing off root reserves it has not yet replaced. Grazing again at that point shrinks the root system, reduces drought tolerance and thins the stand. Repeated over a season it shifts the pasture toward shallow-rooted, low-producing species and bare ground — the classic signature of overgrazing, which is a function of time, not of animal numbers.

    Can a pasture rest too long?

    Yes. Past full recovery, growth plateaus and forage quality falls off sharply as plants go reproductive — stems and seedheads instead of leaf. On cool-season grass, quality drops hard once the stand heads out. Over-rested pasture also accumulates dead material that shades new tillers.

    Why does rest need to be longer in summer?

    Cool-season grasses like fescue, orchardgrass and brome have their growth optimum around 60-75 °F. Above 85 °F they slow dramatically — the summer slump. Warm-season species do the opposite, growing hardest in July and August and shutting down in cool weather. Matching rest to the actual growth curve is why a fixed 30-day rotation fails half the year.

    How do I know a paddock has fully recovered?

    Three checks: the stand is back to grazing height for its species, new leaves are emerging rather than existing leaves lengthening, and there are no grazed-off stubs still trying to regrow. On cool-season grass the traditional marker is three fully expanded new leaves per tiller.

    Does rest period change how many paddocks I need?

    Directly. Paddock count is rest divided by graze period, plus one. If summer rest has to double from 30 to 60 days on a three-day move, the rotation needs 21 paddocks instead of 11 — or the graze period has to lengthen, or some cattle have to leave.

    What is the fastest way to lengthen rest without more fence?

    Take paddocks out of the rotation in the spring flush and cut them for hay, graze a second group behind the main herd, or run stockers you can sell when growth slows. Flexible numbers buy rest that fixed cow numbers cannot.

    Does rest period apply to native rangeland the same way?

    The principle holds but the timescale is much longer. Native range in low-rainfall country may need a full growing season of deferment, or rest in alternate years, rather than a 30- to 60-day recovery. Deferred rotation on a multi-year schedule is the standard approach on western range.
