How to calculate stocking rate
Stocking rate is a forage budget, not a tradition. You grow a certain number of pounds of dry matter per acre, cattle can only harvest part of it without damaging regrowth, and each cow eats a known amount every day. Divide the harvestable pounds by the pounds one cow eats over the season and you have your capacity.
Head = (lb DM/acre × utilization × acres) ÷ (body weight × intake % × grazing days)
Worked example
320 grazable acres of fescue-clover growing 3,500 lb DM/acre, grazed continuously at 35% utilization, gives 392,000 lb of harvestable dry matter. A 1,300 lb cow eating 2.6% of body weight takes 33.8 lb a day, or 12,337 lb over 365 days. That works out to about 32 head, or roughly 10 acres per cow.
Common mistakes
- Using deeded acres instead of grazable acres. Timber, ponds, road right-of-way and steep or brushy ground do not feed cattle. Measure the acres cattle actually graze.
- Assuming a 1,000 lb cow. The textbook animal unit is 1,000 lb. Most commercial cows today weigh 1,250 to 1,450 lb and eat proportionally more, which alone can cut capacity by a quarter.
- Setting utilization above what the grazing system supports. Entering 50% while grazing continuously overstates capacity by nearly half.
- Planning on an average year. Half of all years are below average. Stock for a dry year and flex with yearlings.

Questions ranchers ask
How many acres does one cow need?
It depends almost entirely on how much forage the ground grows. In the humid Southeast, 1.5 to 2.5 acres per cow-calf pair for a year is common. On the Southern Plains, 8 to 15 acres. In the Great Basin and desert Southwest, 40 to 200 acres. Run the calculator with your own forage production figure rather than borrowing a neighbor's rule of thumb from a different rainfall zone.
What utilization rate should I use?
Continuous season-long grazing realistically harvests 25% to 35% of what grows. Rotational grazing with planned rest gets 40% to 50%. High-density mob grazing with short graze periods can reach 60% to 70%, but only with the labor, fencing and water to support it. The remainder is trampled, fouled, or left as residual — and residual is what regrows the pasture.
Is stocking rate the same thing as stock density?
No. Stocking rate is animals per acre over a whole grazing season. Stock density is animals per acre at a single moment in one paddock. A ranch can run a light stocking rate for the year while grazing at very high stock density in small breaks. Confusing the two is the most common reason a rotation gets overgrazed.
Should I include the calf in the animal unit?
A 1,000 lb cow with a nursing calf is conventionally 1.0 animal unit until the calf reaches roughly 3 months, then intake climbs. Most extension services use 1.0 to 1.3 AU for a pair across the season, and larger modern cows push higher. If your cows weigh 1,300 lb, use their real weight in this calculator rather than the 1,000 lb textbook cow.
Does this calculator account for drought?
Only through the forage production figure you enter. A drought year can cut production 30% to 60%. The honest approach is to set your stocking rate for a below-average year and use stockers or custom grazing to capture the surplus in good years, so you are never forced to sell cows into a bad market.
How do I find my forage production in pounds of dry matter per acre?
Three ways, in order of accuracy: clip and dry hoop samples from representative spots (use our forage yield calculator), read a grazing stick calibrated to your forage type, or pull the estimated production figure for your soil map unit from the USDA-NRCS Web Soil Survey ecological site description.
Why does my calculated carrying capacity differ from what I actually run?
Usually one of four reasons: your real utilization is lower than assumed, part of the acreage is unusable (timber, water, steep ground, sacrifice areas), cows are heavier than assumed, or you are supplementing hay during the grazing season and calling it grazing. Subtract the non-grazable acres before you enter total acres.
What happens if I overstock by 20%?
Rarely a collapse in year one — that is what makes it dangerous. You get lower weaning weights, thinner cows at breeding, a delayed conception rate, more hay fed earlier, and a gradual shift in the plant community toward shorter-lived, less productive species. The cost shows up two or three years later in the calf crop.
Buying females to fill that capacity?
