    How to calculate cattle mineral intake

    Mineral tags list a target intake in ounces per head per day, but the only way to know what cattle are actually eating is to track bags against head count and days, then do the arithmetic. This calculator runs both directions: it tells you your actual intake from bags fed, and it prices out what hitting the target intake should cost.

    Total oz fed = bags × bag weight (lb) × 16
    Actual intake (oz/head/day) = total oz fed ÷ (head × days)
    Variance = (actual − target) ÷ target
    Cost/head/day at target = (target oz ÷ (bag weight × 16)) × $/bag

    Worked example

    You feed six 50-lb bags of mineral to 100 head over 14 days. That is 6 × 50 × 16 = 4,800 oz fed across 100 × 14 = 1,400 head-days, or 3.43 oz/head/day. Against a 4 oz target, that is 14% under — worth watching but not alarming, and consistent with cool, wet weather suppressing intake. At $28/bag and the 4 oz target, the mineral should cost about $0.098 per head per day, or roughly $35.80 per head per year.

    Common mistakes

    • Judging intake off one or two days. Daily consumption swings with weather; use at least a full week, ideally two, before drawing a conclusion.
    • Not counting all the head with access. If calves, bulls, or visiting neighbor cattle can reach the feeder, they are eating mineral too and should be counted.
    • Confusing tub or block consumption with bag intake. Tubs list intake per head per day on the label differently than bagged loose mineral — convert carefully rather than assuming the same math applies.
    • Ignoring rained-on or caked mineral. Weighing what was put out, not what was actually consumed, overstates true intake and hides a feeder or cover problem.

    How do I check whether cattle are eating the right amount of mineral?

    Track bags fed against days and head count over a real feeding period — at least a week, ideally longer to smooth out weather effects. Divide total mineral fed by head-days to get ounces per head per day, then compare that to the target on the tag. A single day's observation is too noisy to trust.

    What is a normal target intake for loose cattle mineral?

    Most complete loose mineral products target 3-4 oz per head per day (roughly 4-7 lb per head per month), though high-mag (hi-mag) minerals for grass tetany prevention often target 4 oz, and some fortified or medicated minerals target as low as 2 oz.

    Why are cattle eating way more mineral than the target intake?
