How to calculate bunk space
Bunk space requirements depend far more on feeding method than on the bunk itself. Limit-fed cattle all try to eat within minutes of feed hitting the bunk, so every animal needs a spot at once. Free-choice or self-fed cattle spread their visits across the day, so a fraction of the same linear footage supports the same head count.
in/head = base requirement × feeding-method factor
Total ft needed = (head × in/head) ÷ 12 ÷ bunk sides
Head supported = (bunk length × 12 × sides) ÷ in/head
Worked example
150 mature cows limit-fed once daily at 28 in/head need 150 × 28 = 4,200 in, or 350 ft of one-sided bunk — 175 ft if the bunk is fed from both sides. A 200 ft two-sided bunk supplies 4,800 in of capacity, enough for 171 head, so this herd has roughly 21 head of surplus capacity in that bunk.
Common mistakes
- Using free-choice space allowances for limit-fed cattle. Confusing the two understates requirements by a factor of three or more and produces real bunk fights.
- Forgetting to double for a two-sided bunk. A 100 ft bunk fed from both sides supplies 200 ft of eating positions, not 100.
- Sizing for the average animal in a mixed pen. Timid, younger, or newly received cattle need more margin, not less, since dominant animals crowd them out first.
- Ignoring feed delivery time. Slow delivery across a long bunk gives early-fed cattle a head start and effectively shortens the usable window for animals at the far end.

Round bale feeders are typically sized for 8 to 12 head per ring for mature cows under free-choice access, roughly equivalent to 24 to 30 inches of feeding-face equivalent per head when hay is limited, though rings allow more overlap than a straight bunk because cattle rotate around the circumference.
What happens if bunk space is too short?
