    How to calculate creep feed

    Creep feeding pencils out or does not depending on three things: how much added gain you actually get per pound of feed (the conversion), what that feed costs, and how much of the added value the market's price slide takes back on heavier calves. All three numbers are specific to your pasture and your marketing plan, so a rule of thumb from a neighbor's operation on different grass will not transfer cleanly.

    Feed consumed = intake (lb/day) × days on creep
    Added weight = feed consumed ÷ conversion (lb feed per lb gain)
    Feed cost/head = (feed consumed ÷ 2,000) × $/ton
    Slide adjustment = (added weight ÷ 100) × $/cwt slide
    Net return/head = value of added pounds after slide − feed cost

    Worked example

    Fifty calves are creep-fed for 75 days averaging 4 lb/head/day, for 300 lb of feed per calf. At an 8:1 conversion that is 37.5 lb of added weaning weight. At $340/ton, feed costs $6.38 per calf. If the base price is $235/cwt with a $9/cwt slide, the slide on 37.5 added pounds costs about $3.38/cwt, dropping the sell price to roughly $231.62/cwt on the heavier calf — the added pounds are still worth more than the feed costs in most years, but the margin is thinner than the sticker price of the feed suggests.

    Common mistakes

    • Using a flat industry-average conversion. An 8:1 conversion on drought grass can be 12:1 or worse on a lush year, because creep substitutes for grass the calf would have eaten anyway.
    • Ignoring the price slide entirely. Treating every added pound as worth the full base $/cwt overstates the return, sometimes by a meaningful margin on calves already near the top of a weight bracket.
    • Forgetting feeder and labor cost. Feeder rental, extra checking trips, and the risk of feeder-shy calves getting bullied off feed are real costs this math does not include.
    • Creep feeding kept replacement heifers hard. Heavy creep feeding can deposit fat in the developing udder and reduce future milk production — go light or skip creep on heifers you intend to keep.

    Is creep feeding calves worth the cost?

    It depends on the conversion, the feed price, and the calf market's price slide. At a 8:1 conversion, $320/ton creep, and a normal 8-10 cwt price slide, creep feeding weaned calves often nets $10-30 per head, but on lush grass with a poor conversion (12:1 or worse) it can lose money. Run your own numbers rather than a rule of thumb.

    What is a typical creep feed conversion rate?

    Creep conversion — pounds of creep feed per pound of added weaning weight — typically runs 6:1 on thin grass or drought-stressed pasture up to 10:1 or 12:1 on good grass where calves are already gaining well from milk and forage. The better the base forage, the worse the conversion, because creep feed substitutes for grass calves would have eaten anyway.

    How much creep feed will a calf eat per day?

    Intake typically starts near 0.5-1 lb per head per day in the first few weeks on creep and climbs to 2-3% of body weight by weaning if self-fed free choice, though most commercial creep programs limit intake with feeder design or a limit-fed protein/roughage mix to control cost and conversion.

    Why does the price slide matter for creep feeding decisions?

    Does creep feeding replace milk or grass in the calf's diet?

    Partially. Research consistently shows a substitution effect — creep-fed calves eat somewhat less forage and nurse slightly less than they would otherwise, which is exactly why the added gain per pound of creep feed (the conversion) is well below the calf's overall feed efficiency.

    Should I creep feed replacement heifers?

    Generally no, or only lightly. Heavy creep feeding of heifer calves intended to be kept as replacements can lay down excess fat in the udder that reduces future milk production, so most extension guidance limits or skips creep on retained heifers even when the steers on the same operation are creeped.
