How to calculate cattle protein supplement
Protein supplementation decisions come down to one comparison: how much crude protein the cow needs each day versus how much her forage is actually delivering. The difference, divided by the supplement's own CP content, is the pound figure you need to hand-feed.

CP from forage = forage DMI (lb) × forage CP %
CP deficit = CP required − CP from forage

Worked example
A 1,200 lb cow in late gestation eating 24 lb of dry matter needs about 9.5% CP in the diet, or 2.28 lb of crude protein a day. Weathered hay testing 7% CP supplies only 1.68 lb, leaving a 0.6 lb deficit. Closing that with a 32% CP range cube takes about 1.9 lb per head per day — roughly $0.36/head/day at $380/ton, or $540 for 50 cows over 30 days.
Common mistakes
- Guessing forage CP instead of testing it. Green-looking hay can still be well under 8% CP depending on maturity at cutting; a lab test costs far less than over- or under-feeding a herd all winter.
- Sizing supplement off body weight instead of the actual deficit. Two cows the same weight on different hay can need very different amounts of supplemental protein.
- Feeding energy feeds on a 3x-weekly schedule. Reduced feeding frequency works for protein because of rumen nitrogen recycling, but high-starch energy feeds fed that way risk acidosis and founder.
- Ignoring cost per pound of protein. A cheaper $/ton supplement with lower CP can cost more per pound of actual protein delivered than a pricier, higher-CP product.

Questions ranchers ask
How much crude protein does a beef cow need?
Requirements rise with production stage: roughly 7-8% CP of diet dry matter for a dry pregnant cow, 9-10% in late gestation, and 11-12.5% or higher for a cow in early lactation nursing a calf. Growing and finishing cattle also need higher CP than mature dry cows.
How do I know if my hay is short on protein?
Test it. Mature, weathered grass hay commonly runs 6-8% crude protein, which is below what a lactating cow needs and can be marginal even for a dry cow in late gestation. A forage test is the only reliable way to know — visual appearance is a poor guide to actual CP content.
What is a typical protein supplement and how much is fed?
Range cubes and cottonseed meal-based supplements commonly run 20-40% crude protein and are fed at 2-5 lb per head per day depending on the size of the forage deficit. Higher-CP supplements let you feed fewer pounds to close the same gap, which matters for hand-feeding on pasture.
Can I feed protein supplement three times a week instead of daily?
Yes. Because rumen microbes recycle nitrogen efficiently, feeding the same weekly total protein in 3 feedings instead of 7 works well for supplements, unlike energy feeds which need more frequent feeding to avoid acidosis. Multiply the daily amount by 7 and divide by 3 to get the per-feeding amount.
Is it cheaper to feed more hay or supplement protein?
Usually supplement, once forage is genuinely protein-deficient, because a small amount of high-CP supplement corrects rumen microbial function and improves how efficiently the cow digests the poor-quality forage she is already eating. Feeding more low-protein hay alone does not fix a protein deficiency.
How much does it cost to supplement a cow herd for a month?
It depends on the deficit and supplement price, but a common range is $10-$30 per cow per month for a moderate deficit corrected with a 2-4 lb/day, 20-32% CP supplement priced at $300-$450/ton. Larger deficits or higher-priced supplements push that higher.
Does a mineral or tub product count as a protein supplement?
Only if it supplies a meaningful pound of crude protein — most loose minerals are fed at ounces per day and do not move the needle on a real CP deficit. Protein tubs and liquid feeds vary widely in CP content and intake rate, so check the tag and expected daily consumption before assuming it closes the gap.
What happens if I underfeed protein to a lactating cow?
Milk production and rebreeding performance both suffer, because inadequate rumen protein slows fiber digestion, which in turn depresses total intake and energy status right when the cow's demands are highest. Body condition loss and delayed return to estrus are the most common downstream effects.
