    How to calculate hay bale

    Hay is sold three ways — by the bale, by the ton, and by the load — and the only honest common denominator is pounds. Divide 2,000 by bale weight for bales per ton, take waste out of the bale to get what the cattle actually eat, then divide by the herd's daily demand for days per bale.

    Bales per ton = 2,000 ÷ bale weight (lb)
    Usable hay = bale weight × (1 − waste %)
    Cow-days per bale = usable hay ÷ lb per head per day

    Worked example

    One hundred tons of hay in 1,100 lb round bales is 1.82 bales per ton, or 182 bales. Fed in an open ring at 15% waste each bale delivers 935 lb of hay. Cows eating 33 lb a day get 28 cow-days from a bale, so fifty head empty one every 0.57 days — call it two bales every day — and the whole stack lasts about 103 days.

    Common mistakes

    • Comparing per-bale prices. A cheap bale is often a light bale. Convert to dollars per ton every time.
    • Ignoring waste in days-per-bale. The 20 percentage points between a cone ring and hay rolled out on mud is a fifth of your stack.
    • Averaging bale weight across crops. Cornstalk bales and alfalfa bales from the same baler differ by hundreds of pounds.
    • Buying deck space instead of tons. Most hay loads gross out on axle weight long before they fill the trailer.

    Questions ranchers ask

    How many round bales are in a ton?

    It depends entirely on bale weight. At 1,000 lb it is exactly two bales per ton; at 1,200 lb it is 1.67 bales; at 800 lb it takes 2.5. This is why hay quoted per bale and hay quoted per ton can only be compared after you weigh a bale.

    How many small square bales make a ton?

    Small squares usually run 40 to 70 lb, so a ton is 29 to 50 bales, with 50 lb bales — 40 to the ton — being the common rule of thumb. Horse-quality alfalfa squares are frequently heavier than grass squares of the same dimensions.

    How many days will one round bale feed my cows?

    Divide the usable hay in the bale by what the herd is offered per day. A 1,100 lb bale fed in a ring at 15% waste delivers about 935 lb to cows eating 34 lb apiece, so it feeds roughly 27 cow-days — under half a day for a 60-cow herd.

    How many round bales fit on a trailer or semi?

    A 24 ft gooseneck typically hauls 8 to 10 5x5 bales double-stacked within weight limits; a 48 ft flatbed hauls 34 to 36 4x5 bales or about 21 to 24 5x6 bales, and usually grosses out on weight before it runs out of deck. Always check the axle rating before the deck space.

    Is it cheaper to buy round bales or large squares?

    Large squares almost always haul and store cheaper per ton because they stack solid with no wasted air, and they are more consistent in weight. Round bales are cheaper to make and easier to feed with a bale ring and a loader tractor, which is why most cow-calf operations still run rounds.

    How do I convert a hay price per bale to a price per ton?

    Price per ton equals price per bale times 2,000, divided by bale weight in pounds. A $65 bale weighing 1,100 lb is $118 per ton. Do this before you compare quotes — sellers with lighter bales frequently look cheaper and are not.

    Should I count waste when working out bales per day?

    Yes. Waste comes out of the bale, not out of thin air. A bale fed unrolled on the ground can lose a third of its weight before a cow swallows it, which changes days-per-bale far more than a small error in cow weight does.

    How many bales do I need for the whole winter?

    Multiply your herd's daily offered pounds by the number of feeding days, then divide by bale weight — or use the winter hay calculator, which adds moisture, production stage and a storm reserve to the same math.
