How to calculate hay waste
Cattle eat what they eat. Waste is extra hay you have to put out on top of that, so it is calculated by dividing consumption by one minus the waste rate — not by multiplying consumption by it. Getting that backwards understates the cost of a poor feeder by a meaningful margin.
Hay eaten = head × lb/head/day × days
Hay offered = hay eaten ÷ (1 − waste %)
Hay wasted = hay offered − hay eaten
Payback = feeder cost ÷ (tons saved × $/ton)
Worked example
Fifty cows eating 33 lb a day for 120 days consume 198,000 lb of hay. Fed in an open ring at 15% waste you have to put out 232,900 lb, so 34,900 lb — 17.5 tons — never gets eaten. Cone rings at 6% waste need only 210,600 lb, saving 22,300 lb, or 11.2 tons. At $140 a ton that is $1,560 a winter against three cone rings costing $2,400 — paid back in about a season and a half, then pure saving.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying instead of dividing. 15% waste on 198,000 lb of consumption is 34,900 lb, not 29,700 lb.
- Judging waste by eye. A trampled mat around a ring looks small and weighs a great deal.
- Putting out several days of hay at once. Convenience buys itself with a fifth of the bale.
- Buying one more ring instead of a better ring. Feeder design beats feeder count for reducing waste, though you still need enough space for the herd.

Questions ranchers ask
How much hay is wasted with a round bale ring?
Research from Michigan State and Oklahoma State puts an open steel ring at 12 to 21% waste, a sheeted ring at 11 to 13%, a cone insert ring at 5 to 7%, and a cradle or trailer-style feeder at 11 to 15%. Rolling hay out on the ground runs 25 to 45% depending on how much is offered at once.
Which round bale feeder wastes the least hay?
Cone feeders consistently test lowest, usually under 6%. The cone holds the bale up off the ground and forces cattle to pull hay inward and over the ring rather than dragging it out and trampling it. Sheeted rings are second; open rings and cradles are noticeably worse.
Does a better hay feeder actually pay for itself?
Almost always in one winter for a herd of any size. Moving 50 cows from an open ring at 15% to a cone at 6% saves roughly 9% of the hay fed — about 8 tons over 120 days — which at $140 a ton is over $1,100 against a feeder costing $500 to $900.
Why does unrolling hay waste so much?
Because cattle lie on it, dung on it and walk it into mud. Unrolling can be a reasonable practice if you unroll only what the herd will clean up in a few hours and you are deliberately spreading fertility and litter, but as a routine full-day feeding method the losses are the highest of any option.
Does limiting feeding time reduce waste?
Substantially. Restricting access to six to eight hours a day, rather than free-choice around the clock, has cut waste from around 13% to under 5% in Missouri trials, because cattle eat rather than loaf and bed in the hay. It requires enough feeder space for the whole group to eat at once.
How much feeder space does each cow need?
For free-choice feeding, about 6 inches of linear space per cow is enough because they take turns. For limit-feeding, every cow has to eat at the same time, so plan on 24 to 30 inches per head — which usually means more rings, not just a shorter feeding window.
Is waste different for hay of different quality?
Yes, in both directions. Cattle sort against stemmy, low-quality hay and waste more of it, but they also over-consume very high-quality hay when it is free-choice, which shows up as intake rather than waste. Feeding a poor bale with limited access is often the cheapest way to make it disappear.
Should I count waste as hay I still have to buy?
Yes. Waste comes off the top of the stack, so a 15% waste rate means buying 15% more hay to deliver the same nutrition. That is exactly how this calculator treats it, and why the payback on a better feeder is so fast.
