    How to calculate hay cost per ton

    Hay has four prices: what the seller quotes, what it costs delivered, what it costs per ton of dry matter, and what it costs per ton that a cow actually eats. Only the last one belongs in a budget, and it is usually 40 to 60% higher than the first.

    $/ton = (price + freight) × 2,000 ÷ bale weight
    $/ton DM = $/ton ÷ dry matter %
    $/ton eaten = $/ton DM ÷ [(1 − storage loss) × (1 − feeding waste)]
    $/ton TDN = $/ton eaten ÷ TDN %

    Worked example

    A $70 bale weighing 1,050 lb with $8 of hauling is $78 delivered, or $149 a ton. At 88% dry matter that is $169 per ton of dry matter. Store it outside at 12% loss and feed it in an open ring at 15% waste and only 75% survives, so a ton eaten costs $227. At 55% TDN, the energy in it costs $413 a ton — which is the number to hold a bag of range cubes up against.

    Common mistakes

    • Shopping on price per bale. Bale weight varies 40% between sellers. Per-ton or nothing.
    • Ignoring moisture. Buying wet hay means paying forage prices for water, and then watching it heat in the stack.
    • Leaving freight out of the comparison. Local hay at $140 often beats $110 hay 200 miles away.
    • Buying untested hay for anything but dry cows. Without a TDN and crude protein figure you cannot tell cheap from expensive.

    How do I calculate hay cost per ton from a price per bale?

    Multiply the price per bale by 2,000 and divide by the bale weight in pounds. A $70 bale weighing 1,050 lb is $133 per ton. Add hauling and unloading before comparing it to a delivered quote — freight on hay routinely runs $10 to $30 a ton depending on distance and bale type.

    What is the difference between cost per ton and cost per ton of dry matter?

    Cost per ton is what you pay for whatever came off the truck, water included. Cost per ton of dry matter divides that by the dry matter percentage, giving you the price of actual feed. Hay at $130 a ton and 88% dry matter is $148 per ton of dry matter; the same price at 78% dry matter is $167.

    Is cheaper hay actually cheaper?

    Often not. A $90 ton of cornstalk-quality grass hay at 48% TDN and 20% feeding waste can cost more per unit of energy delivered than $140 alfalfa-grass mix at 58% TDN fed in a cone ring, once you add the supplement the poor hay forces you to buy. Price hay per unit of nutrient, not per ton.

    How much does hauling hay cost?

    Rates vary, but a rough working figure is $3.50 to $5.00 per loaded mile for a semi carrying 20 to 24 tons of large squares, which puts a 150-mile haul near $25 to $35 a ton. Round bales haul poorly — the same trailer carries less tonnage, so the per-ton freight is higher.

    Should storage and feeding losses be in the price?

    Yes, if you want a decision-quality number. Hay stored outside on the ground can lose 25% of its dry matter before it reaches the feeder, and the feeder can lose another 15%. That $130 ton has effectively cost you $200 per ton of hay a cow swallowed.

    How do I compare baleage to dry hay?

    Only on a dry matter basis. Baleage at 50% dry matter is half water by weight, so $60 a ton of baleage is $120 per ton of dry matter — before accounting for its usually higher digestibility and much lower storage loss. Never compare wrapped and dry forage on as-fed price.

    What is a fair price for hay this year?

    USDA Agricultural Marketing Service publishes weekly National Hay, Feed & Seed reports with regional prices by quality grade, and most state extension services run an annual hay directory. Use those for the market, then use this calculator to see whether a specific load is priced fairly for its weight and moisture.

    Is it worth buying tested hay?

    For anything beyond dry cow maintenance, yes. A $25 forage test on a lot of hay tells you the TDN and crude protein you are buying and usually pays for itself in supplement you did not need to buy — or in the calf gain you would otherwise have quietly given away.
