How to calculate barbed wire
Barbed wire math is footage before it is rolls. Multiply the run length by the number of strands to get total wire, add a waste allowance for every splice and tie-off, then divide by roll length and round up — you cannot buy two thirds of a roll.
Wire feet = length × strands × (1 + waste %)
Rolls = ceiling(wire feet ÷ 1,320 ft per roll)
Fasteners = posts × strands
Worked example
A mile of five-strand fence: 5,280 × 5 = 26,400 ft of wire. Add 7% for splices and tie-offs and you are at about 28,250 ft, which at 1,320 ft per roll is 21.4 rolls — so 22 rolls on the order. With 441 posts, the same fence takes 441 × 5 = 2,205 staples, about 19 pounds.
Common mistakes
- Ordering exactly four rolls per strand per mile. That is the theoretical number with zero waste. Every corner tie-off and every gate wrap eats footage.
- Rounding rolls down. Finishing a mile 300 feet short on the last strand means a second trip to town and a splice you did not need.
- Mixing high-tensile and low-carbon wire in the same strand. The splice becomes the weakest and least forgiving point on the run.
- Under-buying staples. One per wire per post is the floor; brace posts and wrap-backs use several more, and dropped staples in tall grass are gone.

How many rolls of barbed wire are in a mile of fence?
A standard roll of barbed wire is 1,320 feet — a quarter mile — so one strand of wire takes 4 rolls per mile. A four-strand fence takes 16 rolls per mile and a five-strand fence takes 20, before you add anything for splices, tie-offs at corners, and wire wasted at gates.
How many strands of barbed wire do I need for cattle?
Four strands is the working standard for mature cattle on a perimeter fence, and five strands is common on boundary fences, along roads, or where you run bulls or wean calves. Three strands will hold quiet cows in interior cross-fencing but will not hold calves or pressured cattle.
What is the standard spacing for barbed wire strands?
A typical five-strand cattle fence sets wires at roughly 10, 18, 26, 34 and 44 inches above ground; a four-strand fence commonly runs 12, 22, 32 and 42 inches. Keep the bottom wire high enough to mow under but low enough that a calf will not crawl it, and space the top two tighter where cattle lean.
What gauge barbed wire should I use?
12.5 gauge is the common working gauge for cattle fence and comes in standard and high-tensile. High-tensile 15.5 gauge is lighter, cheaper per foot and holds more tension, but it is less forgiving of poor bracing. Heavier low-carbon 12.5 gauge is more workable by hand and easier to splice in the field.
How much extra wire should I order for waste?
Five to ten percent covers splices, tie-offs at every corner and end, wire wrapped back at gate openings, and the piece you cut off after a bad splice. On broken ground with many corners, use the higher figure — a fence with a lot of direction changes burns wire at every one of them.
How many staples or clips do I need per mile?
One fastener per wire per post. A four-strand fence on 12 ft spacing needs about 441 posts per mile, so 1,764 fasteners per mile, plus extras at brace posts where wire is wrapped and tied. Order staples by the pound — roughly 100 to 130 1.75-inch barbed staples per pound.
Should barbed wire be stapled tight to the post?
No. Staples should be driven at a slight angle across the grain and left just loose enough that the wire can slide during temperature change and when an animal hits it. Wire pinned tight snaps at the staple in cold weather and pulls the post when something runs through the fence.
How much does a mile of barbed wire fence cost in wire alone?
