How to calculate cattle water requirement
Water intake is driven by four things: body weight, physiological class, air temperature, and how much water the diet already supplies. Extension tables usually quote a 1,200 lb dry cow at moderate temperature, and every other situation is that figure scaled up or down.
gal/head/day = baseline × class factor × temperature factor × diet factor × (weight ÷ 1,200)
Herd demand = gal/head/day × head
Peak hour flow = herd demand × peak share ÷ 60 minutes
Worked example
100 lactating cows averaging 1,300 lb on dry hay during a 90°F stretch: 12 gal baseline × 1.55 (lactating) × 1.5 (90°F) × 1.0 (dry feed) × 1.08 (1,300 ÷ 1,200) = about 30 gal/head/day. That is roughly 3,000 gallons a day for the herd, and at a 20% peak-hour share the water system has to move about 600 gallons in an hour — 10 gallons a minute. A 5 gpm well only keeps up if there is enough stored volume in front of it.
Common mistakes
- Sizing on daily total instead of peak hour. Cattle water in a bunch after grazing. A system that satisfies 24-hour volume can still run empty at 4 p.m. in August.
- Using green-grass draw to size permanent infrastructure. The same herd on dry hay in January or dormant range in August pulls far more from the tank.
- Ignoring tank access. A big tank with 6 feet of usable edge waters cattle slowly no matter how fast it refills, because boss cows control the space.
- Assuming winter demand is trivial. Intake drops, but ice and a small opening cut real consumption below requirement, which pulls feed intake down with it.

Questions ranchers ask
How many gallons of water does a cow drink per day?
A dry mature cow drinks roughly 9 to 15 gallons a day in mild weather and 18 to 25 gallons when temperatures climb past 90°F. A lactating cow drinks substantially more — commonly 15 to 20 gallons in mild weather and 25 to 30 gallons in summer heat, because milk is roughly 87% water.
How much water does a cow need in winter?
Water intake falls with temperature but never stops. At 40°F a mature cow still drinks about 9 to 11 gallons a day, and at freezing she may drink 6 to 9. The bigger winter problem is access, not requirement: cattle drinking from a partly frozen tank cut intake, which cuts dry matter intake and body condition.
Does dry hay increase water requirement compared with grazing?
Yes. Lush spring grass can be 75-85% water, so grazing cattle get a large share of their intake from the forage itself. A herd on dry hay at 12% moisture gets almost none from feed, so the tank has to supply nearly all of it — the same herd can double measured tank draw moving from green grass to a hay ration.
How much does salt or high-sulfate water change intake?
High total dissolved solids raise water intake as cattle try to flush the load, and above roughly 5,000 ppm TDS you see reduced feed intake and performance. Water over 1,000 ppm sulfate is a polio risk in growing cattle. Test any new well before you build a herd around it.
How fast does a tank need to refill?
Cattle drink in social bursts, not evenly across 24 hours. A common design rule is that a tank plus its recovery rate must supply the herd's peak hour, which can be 20-25% of daily demand. Size the well or pipeline flow so the tank refills within that window rather than only meeting daily total.
How much tank space do cattle need at the water?
Plan roughly 1 linear foot of accessible tank perimeter per 10 to 15 head for a herd that can walk to water easily, and closer to 1 foot per 5 to 10 head in tight rotational paddocks or feedlot pens where cattle arrive together. Boss cows guarding a short tank edge is a real intake limiter.
Do bulls and horses drink more than cows?
Mature bulls drink about 20-25% more than a dry cow of the same age because they are heavier. A mature horse is closer to 8 to 12 gallons a day at rest, more in work or heat. Both should be counted at their own rate rather than lumped in as cow equivalents.
Should I count evaporation and leaks in the daily number?
For an open tank in summer, yes. An uncovered tank in hot, dry, windy country can lose a meaningful share of its surface volume per day to evaporation, and a slow float leak silently doubles pumping. Compare metered pumping against calculated demand — the gap is your leak plus evaporation.
