How to calculate corral space
Pen space is set by function first, class second, and surface third. A cow standing in a crowding pen for ten minutes needs a fraction of the area the same cow needs standing in a dirt lot for a week, and the same pen on wet ground effectively shrinks because cattle bunch on whatever stays firm.
sq ft/head = function base × class factor × surface factor
Total area = sq ft/head × head
Head held = pen length × pen width ÷ sq ft/head
Worked example
60 mature cows in a holding pen on well-drained dirt: 45 sq ft base × 1.0 class × 1.4 dirt = 63 sq ft per head, or about 3,780 sq ft. A 100 × 60 ft pen is 6,000 sq ft, so it holds roughly 95 head at that standard — comfortable for this draft, and tight if you ever gather 100 pairs, since pairs need about 30% more room each.
Common mistakes
- Sizing the holding pen for an average gather. The pen only matters on the biggest day of the year — a full pot load, or the whole herd off one pasture.
- Overfilling the crowding tub. Cattle need room to turn toward the alley. A tub packed to the back stops flow and forces handling that stresses cattle and people.
- Using cow numbers for pairs. A calf beside its mother takes real floor space and changes how the group moves.
- Ignoring drainage. A well-sized dirt pen that holds water is undersized every spring, and mud costs you performance as well as area.

Questions ranchers ask
How many square feet does a cow need in a corral?
A mature cow in a short-term holding pen needs about 40 to 50 square feet on a dry surfaced lot, 20 to 25 square feet in a crowding pen ahead of the tub, and 250 to 400 square feet if she is going to stand in a dirt pen overnight or longer. Space requirements go up sharply the longer cattle stay.
How big should a crowding pen and tub be?
A crowding pen should hold no more than about 15 to 20 head at a time so cattle can turn and follow, and a standard sweep tub is sized for 5 to 6 mature cows. Filling a tub to the back is the classic mistake — cattle need room to turn toward the alley, and a jammed tub stops flow.
How wide should a working alley be for cattle?
A straight-sided working alley for mature cows runs 26 to 28 inches wide; 28 to 30 inches for very large cows or bulls. Sloped-sided alleys run 16 inches at the floor and 32 at the top so the same alley works for calves and cows without an animal turning around.
Does the pen surface change how much space cattle need?
Yes, substantially. Concrete or well-surfaced lots need the least area per head, dirt lots need two to three times as much to stay workable, and any unsurfaced pen in wet country needs more again because mud destroys usable area and cattle bunch on the high ground.
How many head should a holding pen hold?
Size the holding pen for the largest single group you will ever work at once — usually a full load off a pot trailer or one pasture group. A pen sized for the average draft is too small on the one day it matters, and cattle held too tight get hurt and stop flowing into the tub.
How much space do calves need compared with mature cows?
Roughly half to two thirds. Weaned calves at 400 to 600 lb need about 20 to 25 square feet in a holding pen versus 40 to 50 for a mature cow, but they need more, not less, care on alley width — a wide alley lets a light calf turn around and jam the run.
Should corral pens be square or long and narrow?
Long, slightly narrow pens flow better than square ones because cattle move along a fence line toward a corner gate. Square pens tend to leave animals circling in the middle. Keep gates in corners on the natural line of travel rather than in the center of a fence.
How much space per head for a bull pen?
Bulls need substantially more room than cows and should not be crowded — plan on 60 to 100 square feet per bull in a short-term holding pen and 400 to 800 square feet each in a long-term dirt lot, with heavier fence and no shared corners where a bull can pin another animal.
